-
Plan ahead – it’s a great time to get rid
of things you haven’t used in a long time (don’t move them again!).
-
Keep the following items on hand: Boxes,
marking pen, bubble wrap, newspaper and tissue paper, tape and scissors,
tape measure
-
Label each box with its contents, which
room it goes to and whether or not it’s fragile. (It’s a really good
idea to label all of the boxes.) You may even want to color code by
room.
-
If possible, pack audio-video equipment
in their original boxes. Label cables and tighten transit screws. If
removing screws, tape them to the objects as they are removed.
-
Don’t load more than 30-40 pounds into any
one box (trust me on this one).
-
Cushion contents with bubble wrap (valuables),
paper towels or packing material.
-
Pack books tightly on end in small boxes.
-
Have your rugs and draperies cleaned before
moving.
-
Pack linens in drawers, but don’t overload
them.
-
Pack medicines in a leak-proof container.
-
Carry all valuables with you.
-
When unpacking, you may want to leave boxes
in garage (by color-coded sections) and then bring them into the house
one or two at a time so you can unpack as you go and not get overwhelmed!
